The Safe Schools Program
Watch The Program in Action at Centennial Arts Academy

The Safe Schools Programs was inspired by a tragic incident that took place in a DeKalb County, Georgia School during the 2008 - 2009 School Year. The phenomenon of Bullying is one that is spreading through school systems throughout our nation at an alarming rate. Bullying is not restricted to any particular segment of our society. Bullying transcends racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, gender, age and all other indicators.

As we have for 14 years now, SAF is committed to developing and providing the most unique and powerful educational programming available. We present The Safe Schools Program with an even greater sense of urgency. We do so because recent events tell us that our children's very lives may well depend on how we respond to this urgent cry for help.

"The Calvin Sims Story"

Written by Veteran Educator, Gwen Smith. This is the incredible true story of a little boy, who once the victim of bullies became himself a bully.

Children will read how and why this little boy, who loved to read, went on to become a mentor and advocate for children the world over.

What can be more exciting than for children to read this book then have the subject of the book stand before them for this powerful program.

Description of Modules

Assessment: The program starts by asking questions to determine what students know about bullying. This interactive module sparks the interest of the children and prepares them for the highly interactive modules that follow. Teachers are advised to take notes as they are sure to learn a lot about how children actually feel and what is going on in their school and classrooms. (return)

Definition of Bullying: An activity where children identify the terminology of bullying. This module compliments the Assessment Module in that it further indicates what children know and sheds more detailed light onto exactly what is taking place at school. Here we establish a common language for dealing with bullying. (return)

Why are some children bullies: During this activity we will explore the underlying factors that cause some children to be mean to others. Almost subliminally, aggressive children will learn ways to self correct their behavior while less aggressive children will learn to understand and even empathize with children who may express their emotions in mean, or overly aggressive ways. (return)

Why are some children victims: This module is designed to empower the less aggressive children to feel good about themselves. It will actually cause the more aggressive children to better identify with this group. It may cause many to want to be a part of this group. (return)

What to do if you are picked on: This module empowers children to take appropriate action if they are picked on. It assures them that seeking help from a trusted adult is not a negative reflection on themselves but the mature, intelligent way to deal with an incident of bullying. This is also a way to discreetly warn aggressive children that their bad behavior will not go unreported. (return)

How to protect yourself: Students are lead to discuss and discover appropriate ways to interact with an aggressive child such that the situation does not escalate. Provocative behavior is defined and children are taught that by no means are they to resort to aggressive or violent behavior as a response to bullying. (return)

What is the role of friends: The importance of developing positive friendships is examined. The role of positive friends in preventing bullying as well as providing a support resource for a child who feels uncomfortable or is being harassed. This module also deals with the "don't snitch" peer standard. Children are taught to seek help from a trusted adult not only for themselves but also for a friend. Here we define the true meaning of a friend. (return)

Self Talk Exercises: This exercise is designed to inoculate the less aggressive child from the depression and self doubt which often results from encountering more aggressive children. Designed to bolster the child's self-image and sense of confidence, this module shields the child from the residual, long term affects of being bullied. (return)

Self Esteem Exercises: This module is a series of exercises that reinforce the child's self-image. It is also designed to make the more aggressive student want to be identified with the less aggressive group. Students are taught that all individuals have talent and value. They are taught that each and every one of us has something that we can be proud of.

Be happy to be you: This final module is a spirited rally where each student is inspired to celebrate their individuality. Much of bullying starts as teasing, this module helps to give the student built-in defense mechanisms such that he or she can withstand the teasing that is inevitable when young people congregate. While these final three modules may seem redundant, they are meant to empower the child to withstand the most detrimental effect of bullying, the loss of self-esteem. (return)
